Clinically Proven

Deter Insect Repellent was clinically tested safe in an independent study composed of 52 human subjects. Deter Insect Repellent is one of the only DEET-free, natural, bug repellents on the market clinically tested for safety.

Clinical Study Summary:

  • Study Title: “52 Subject Human Repeat Insult Patch Test For Skin Irritation And Skin Sensitization Evaluation”. Completed by independent outside laboratory in January 2012
  • Test material: Deter Insect Repellent, Lot# 0110A11
  • Study Subjects: 52 adult volunteers ranging in age from 18 to 61 (17 male subjects, and 35 female subjects)
  • Study duration: 6 weeks
  • Study Results: There were no signs or symptoms of primary irritation or sensitization noted in any of the 52 test subjects
  • Results reviewed by a Board Certified Dermatologist

Study Protocol:

The test material was applied directly to the skin of the intrascapular region (back) of each subject with an occluded adhesive patch. The patch remained in place for 24 hours. A series of 9 consecutive 24-hour exposures were made on each subject 3 times a week for 3 consecutive weeks. The 3 week period was followed by a 14 day rest period then each subject was rechallenged with another exposure to the test material. Each subject was evaluated following every 24 hour exposure and for 3 days following the rechallenge. Evaluations looked for any clinical signs of reaction to the test material and were scored using the International Contact Dermatitis Research Group Scoring Scale.

Results:

A total of 11 evaluations were conducted by trained clinical personnel on each of the 52 subjects. No adverse reactions of any kind were reported during the course of the study. All scores using the scoring scale for all subjects were zero (no reaction). All test results were reviewed by a Board Certified Dermatlogist who certified “there were no identifiable signs or symptoms of primary irritation or sensitization (contact allergy) noted for Deter Insect Repellent”.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Anyone with a known allergy to any ingredient in Deter Insect Repellent should not use this product. The results of the independent clinical trial revealed no signs of primary irritation, or contact allergy. However, it should be noted, as with all plant-based products, in rare cases certain individuals may be allergic, or sensitive, to Deter Insect Repellent. It is always a good idea when using any product for the first time to test on a small area (e.g., apply to 1 square inch area of forearm then wait several hours) before applying to larger areas of the body. Should any signs of an allergic reaction, or skin sensitization, (redness, swelling, itching, rash, etc.) be observed discontinue use of this product and consult a physician.
